According to the Russian Association of Human Reproduction (RAHR), 161,705 IVF cycles were performed in Russia in 2021, which is 8.8% more than in 2020.
The number of IVF cycles with PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) amounted to 16,808, which is 33% more than in 2020. The data were presented at the RAHR International Conference on Reproductive Technologies of Today and Tomorrow. The conference is held in Nizhny Novgorod from September 6 to 9.
PGT means testing of embryos for chromosomal abnormalities during IVF before the embryo is transferred into the uterus. According to international studies, the use of PGT increases the effectiveness of IVF, increasing the pregnancy rate by more than 2 times. This is due to the fact that the physician does not transfer embryos that will not develop into a normal pregnancy.
In 2012, Genetico Center began implementing PGT called Embryotest in medical practice. Since 2015, a few reproductive specialists and IVF centers began to use this screening. According to RAHR, every 10th IVF cycle in Russia used PGT in 2021.
An analytical review by Genetico Center showed that approximately 8.9 million IVF cycles were performed in 2022 worldwide. The average annual growth rate was 5.2%.
Russia’s infertility treatment using IVF is at the level of developed countries. According to RAHR, “the number of IVF cycles per 1 million population” in Russia is growing, reaching 1,100 cycles per million in 2021, compared to 665 cycles per million in 2014.
